The report recommends that the Public Finance and Audit Act 1987 be reviewed to clearly establish all the powers and features of contemporary public sector audit and strengthen the Auditor-General’s independence. The Act has provided a workable basis for most of the Auditor-General’s responsibilities for many years, but unlike other Audit Acts around Australia, it has had few changes since it was passed in 1987. In reviewing it, the matters raised in this report should be considered.
